I painted this one yesterday, the first of what will probably be several paintings using my September Nocturnes as inspiration and the starting points for larger pieces. Nice thing is that since they were only 5"x7"... anything is a lot bigger!
Not to be misunderstood... this was painted yesterday in the studio from a study done last September, not from life yesterday.

Nice painting you really caught an effect that would last just minutes. Did you use any photo reference or just the study? Also curios is this one on cotton duck or linen?

Beautiful, Marc! There's something about winter sunsets that is special, I think.
Spectacular sunset. I particularly enjoy the subtle way you have small reflective bits of colour in the foreground, they add a real extra dimension to the image.

Mick there's a lot of broken color but picking that up in the photo is tough to do. There is cobalt violet, viridian, maroon, gray blue, scarlet... a lot of color in there.

Great job Marc! Every day on the way home, the sky incredible. Colors that I would never think of putting together. My ambition is to paint these sunsets and capture the big sky feeling that the observer feels. The darks are difficult for me. What seems such a dark value against the sky, does not compute on the canvas.

Great Marc! I sometimes have trouble translating the field sketches into bigger pieces while trying to maintain the freshness. You did not have that problem here!:{)

September always has the best sunsets, I love the way the trees get black against the sky. Your use of saturated colors really captures a late fall sunset.

I love having a good field study that gives me both the information and the inspiration that makes enlarging it possible.
The dark values are so close to each other that if you saw the original you would see quite a bit of hue shifting going on in them. Unfortunately these don't pick up in the photo.

There is a strength to large masses that are controlled with very subtle hue and value shifts. In a painting like this one it can be tricky not to just get a large dark against a light. That's why when painting that dark I'm really working hard to find hues shifts that play against each other within the dark, but that don't come out of the dark and destroy the integrity of that value mass. It's a challenge but what makes this kind of painting interesting.
I'd suggest not trying to paint a "sunset" but try to paint the magnificent arrangement of hue and value masses that one of those provides.
