A brief encounter....

... with painting outside! I haven't been outside to paint in I don't know how long??!! When I'm not out there frequently, it upsets the balance. This is not much, just an hour yesterday and an hour today in the car during a snowstorm... but it's something.

With about an hour to kill before a meeting in the afternoon, I drove down to Scandia, MN and parked on the widest spot along the road I could find and feels safe in. There wasn't much out in front of me, but we had constant light flurries falling and that was of interest in how it was muting the color and softening the edges of the forms. That's what I put down before packing up and heading off to the meeting.

Earlier today I ran into a friend and artist, Tom Maakestad in Marine on St Croix, MN, and went up to his studio to visit. He pulled out some pastels he's doing as studies for paintings, when he goes cross country skiing. They were gorgeous life studies and it inspired me to try it out also. However, we're having a snow storm so instead of throwing the pastels in a backpack, I threw them into the car and went out to Little Lake, primarily because there is a parking lot there at the boat launch where I thought I'd be safe from slipping and sliding cars and snowplows. It was interesting to work on sketch pad paper and I am going to do more of this. I'm so used to using the sanded pastel papers and really enjoyed the smooth application that this paper gave me.

I had a run in with a car today on the icy roads. I was behind a black sedan that suddenly went into a 540º spin right in front of me. I was barely able to stop and avoid him. Managing to do that, he was now in the opposite lane facing the other direction. Thank goodness there was no oncoming traffic or it would have been a very nasty situation. As it was, he was stunned but okay and got the car going and drove off.

2011 - The 5th Annual Taylors Falls Landscape Workshop

For four years I have been teaching students out of my studio/home here in beautiful and historic Taylors Falls, MN each August. It’s become a tradition, at least for me, to have students come here from all over North America to study landscape painting from life with me. I have enjoyed meeting new friends and painters, seeing the look on the faces of the ‘old pros’ when they discover something new they didn’t know, or the joy of ‘beginners’ when they finish their very ‘first’ painting! These are the results that keep me wanting to teach painters year in and year out.

However, I have a number of students who’ve been in multiple classes who have requested a more ‘advanced’ learning experience. One where we leave the Value Studies and Color Comps (as mandatory exercises) behind, where we dive into the world of painting all day, supplies, materials, technique, business, theory, history, framing, and many of the other topics involved in taking your art a step further along your path to becoming a more complete painter. I agree with them.

So I’m announcing, under the umbrella of the 5th Annual Taylors Falls Workshop…

The workshop will include two days of demonstrations, lecture and instruction about how I paint in the landscape 'en plein air'.  Each day will include a demo, group discussion about painting technique, materials and philosophy, and easel time for students along with easel critique.  I like to concentrate on the basic elements of painting and will include an exercise or two to reinforce some of the basics that we all need to brush up on from time to time.  There will be at least one black&white exercise, and the chance to paint a couple of full color studies as well.  At the end of the two days there will be time for a discussion about your work and for questions as a group.

The workshop is open to oil and pastel painters of any level.

Marc Hanson Workshop April 4-8, 2011

If anyone is interested in traveling to Scottsdale, AZ in April, April 4 -8 to be exact, I will be teaching a workshop for the Scottsdale Artists School. It's a real honor to be asked to teach at a school with the reputation that this one has built over the years of it's existence. The facility is outstanding, as are the staff and of course... the weather!

The workshop will be a 'Field to Studio' based class. We'll spend about two days in the field making preparatory studies and taking photos, and then take all of that information back into the studio,for three days, to design and work up larger paintings. During the week I will demonstrate my entire process for using the studies from Nature to create a more complex, considered and larger painting in the studio. I encourage you to bring along a laptop and camera to view any reference sources to use in addition to your field studies. The Romantic Landscape - Greenwich House Gallery - Cincinnati, OH - 2/11/11 - 3/4/11

I've been invited to be part of a show at the Greenwich House Gallery in Cincinnati, OH (513-871-8787), called 'The Romantic Landscape', opening February 11 and continuing to show through March 4, 2011.

The premise is to show landscape paintings of a softer more 'romantic' or poetic nature. This opportunity arose just recently without much time to prepare. But I decided that I really like the idea and the lady who contacted me, Jennifer King, has a history of being involved in very good projects... so I'm going for it.

This is the first of 3 or 4 pieces that I will be painting to include as my contribution to the show. As I complete the others they'll be posted here too. Thank you for looking in.

January 11, 2011 Painting a memory of morning.

I wrote this quote exactly one week ago, right after getting home from a yoga practice. The morning was stunning. I decided then to paint it from memory as best I could. This is the result.

"Watching four trumpeter swans flying through and into the smokey, rose tinted peach color of a -6ºF morning.Lifting across the lofted fields of fresh snow, warmed by the potential of the sunrise.All given while on the way home at 7am from mind, body and spiritual rejuvenation; what a beautiful morning!"
